Synopsis
This swashbuckling adventure sees the jaunty Sir Rodney Ffing (Sid James), alias
the Blackfinger bouncing about all over Paris, rescuing the French
aristocracy from the
dreaded Madame Guillotine. The know-all but
see-nothing Chief of the Secret Police Citizen Camembert (Kenneth Williams), fails to
penetrate his numerous disguises.
add insult to injury the Black Fingernail’s
trademark is a note left at the crime scene with two fingers rampant, one with a blackened
nail.
After lots of comings and goings between England and France, Sir Rodney falls in love with Jacqueline (Dani Robin), and she helps him escape from the French soldiers. Back in England Citizen Camembert, his assistant Citizen Bidet (Peter Butterworth) and the buxom Desiree Du Barry (Joan Sims) turn up at one of Sir Rodney’s ‘magnificent balls’ to find out who the real fingernail is.
A very elaborate historical Carry On ranking near the top of the series, Sid James alternating between the foppish Ffing and the dashing Fingernail and with adept action scenes. James looks ill-at-ease in drag which he never did like doing anyway, but Butterworth continues to display his habit of stealing scenes whenever he appears. Rothwell’s script, although inaccurate, is true to the spirit of the Revolution and this is one of the classic five Carry Ons.
